California Liquor License Type 58 | Caterer’s Permit
A caterer’s permit may be added to an existing on-sale liquor license and can provide an additional revenue stream for a bar or restaurant. It allows the licensee the ability to cater alcoholic beverages anywhere in the state of California when added to a type 41, 42, 47, or 48 license.
A catering authorization form must be submitted to the ABC for each event, but the fee is only $25.00/day. There is also an annual fee of $131.00.
There is no stand-alone license for catering. You must have a permanent restaurant or bar license in order to apply for the Type 58 permit. There is one exception, but it only applies in rare instances for large catering companies (contact our office at 855-774-9200 if you think you may qualify).
A few other stipulations to keep in mind with a caterer’s permit are:
- At an approved event, you must comply with the terms of your permanent license.
- Service of food is typically not required at your catered event although this does depend on the location (contact us for clarification).
- Persons under the age of 21 may be in attendance at the event, but are not allowed to purchase, possess, or consume alcohol.
- Distilled spirits can not be stored at the event site. They must be returned to the licensed premises at the conclusion of the event.
